Several tests are non deterministic because they are using `assert.verifySteps` at the wrong moment. Helpers such as `afterNextRender`, `nextTick`, `Deferred` are used but those are either not reliable or cumbersome to setup. This PR introduces an asynchronous API on top of `assert.step`/`assert.verifyStep`.
